Reflections from Chicago: What I Brought Home from Alliance For Water Efficiency’s 2025 Symposium

Published: August 11, 2025

A Note From CalWEP Deputy Director Melissa Matlock

The Alliance for Water Efficiency’s Symposium in Chicago wasn’t just another industry conference—it was a chance to zoom out. At CalWEP, we’re often laser-focused on California’s regulatory landscape, program design, and partner needs. But stepping into a national convening like AWE's reminds us that while our challenges may be local, the themes of water efficiency, equity, resilience, and innovation are universal.

From keynote sessions to hallway conversations, it was clear that agencies across the U.S. are navigating many of the same issues we face in California—aging infrastructure, drought preparedness, changing customer expectations, and the need for cross-sector collaboration. But what made this event powerful wasn’t just the alignment of concerns—it was the diversity of responses. I left Chicago with fresh ideas, unexpected partnerships, and a broader sense of what’s possible.

There’s something energizing about being in a room with professionals who are asking different questions or tackling problems with tools we haven’t yet tried. It’s a space where you’re reminded that innovation doesn’t have to be solitary—or confined by state borders. I connected with people I’d only known through Zoom squares or paper citations, and the exchange of experiences was as valuable as any session.

CalWEP’s presence at the Symposium reflects our commitment to staying connected—not only within California, but across the nation. We’re stronger when we learn from each other. And we’re better positioned to serve our members when we bring back insights that challenge our assumptions and expand our toolkit.

As we continue our work back home—whether it's implementing new regulations, refining outreach programs, or building the Implementation Center—it’s important to remember: we’re not alone. And in that shared purpose, there’s a lot of power.

With gratitude,

 Melissa
