Re: AB 1572 (Friedman) – Potable Water: Nonfunctional Turf – Support

Dear Chair Min:

The California Water Efficiency Partnership (CalWEP) is writing in support of AB 1572 (Friedman). This bill would require that the use of potable water be prohibited for the irrigation of nonfunctional turf on commercial, industrial, and institutional properties.

CalWEP (formerly known as the California Urban Water Conservation Council) is a membership-based non-profit organization with a mission to maximize urban water efficiency and conservation throughout California by supporting and integrating innovative technologies and practices; encouraging effective public policies; advancing research, training, and public education; and building collaborative approaches and partnerships. We have over 220 members, including water agencies, businesses, and other organizations. We are also a state chapter of the Alliance for Water Efficiency.

We commend the efforts of Assemblymember Friedman in promoting water efficiency and conservation across California. Our climate is changing, and droughts are becoming our new normal.  AB 1572 represents a significant step towards reducing water consumption and promoting sustainable landscaping choices by prohibiting the irrigation of nonfunctional turf.
