This is the soundtrack of our dry-weather lives in Southern California: TLC's "Waterfalls," Blind Melon's "No Rain," Bruce Springsteen's "The River" and about 100 more H2O-themed ditties playing on an endless loop. That should remind us to take shorter showers and stop washing the cars at home. Or just make us very, very thirsty. 

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has launched a Pandora channel of carefully selected songs as part of an ongoing $5.5 million ad campaign to boost water conservation and recycling. The music is supposed to help keep conservation top of mind in the wake of mandated statewide water reductions. It can also be used as a 5-minute shower timer.

Water and climate: Recognize anthropogenic drought

Since 2012, California has been experiencing its worst drought in more than a century. Temperatures are breaking records and the region is down a year's worth of rainfall1. Forests, fish and wildlife as well as the regional economy are struggling.

California is known as the United States's salad bowl because of its prolific fruit, vegetable and nut production. But fields have had to be left fallow, contributing to statewide losses of US$2.2 billion in 2014 (ref. 2). More than 12 million trees have died (see, with cascading impacts on amphibians, birds and mammals3. Streams and wetlands are drying up, including the American River hatcheries of steelhead and Chinook salmon. More than 17,000 jobs have been lost, mainly in poor rural communities2.

Republican Assemblymembers Formally Request Special Session on California’s Water Crisis

Republican Assemblymembers Bill Brough (R-Dana Point), James Gallagher (R- Nicolaus), Jim Patterson (R-Fresno) and Devon Mathis (R-Visalia) today delivered a formal request to Governor Brown calling for the immediate establishment of a special legislative session to address California’s continuing water crisis as well as ongoing state actions that have failed to deliver as promised.

“Because of this crisis, Californians are hurting, measures taken thus far have failed and the credibility of state government is on the line,” said Brough. “While California is in a supposed state of emergency, those in charge appear to be in a state of sluggishness.”

Save Our Water and Clear Channel Outdoor Launch Billboard Campaign to Encourage Water Conservation

Clear Channel Outdoor (CCO) today announced that it is donating space on its billboards throughout Northern California to Save Our Water, California's official statewide conservation education program. These billboards will feature art from the program's public education campaign, with messages urging Californians to "Let It Go" and let their lawn fade to gold during the state's ongoing historic drought.

Over the past five years, California has experienced some of its driest conditions on record, with snowpack and precipitation at all-time lows. Given the severity of the drought, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. took historic action by issuing an executive order mandating a 25 percent statewide reduction in water use – the first of its kind.

"At this crucial time in California's history, Clear Channel Outdoor strongly supports Governor Brown's decisive action on the drought," said Susan Holshouser, Market President, Clear Channel Outdoor Sacramento. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with the Save Our Water campaign, which is working to engage and educate Californians to conserve water wherever possible."
